Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe current trends in the illicit drug supply relevant to ED presentations, including alpha-2 agonist adulterants, “tusi/pink cocaine,” and ultra-potent synthetic opioids. ​
  2. Recall common and emerging toxidromes using key historical and exam findings.
  3. Summarize evidence-informed strategies to manage intoxication and withdrawal related to emerging drugs of misuse.
  4. Recognize and initiate management of xylazine-associated skin and soft tissue injury.
  5. Identify potential complications related to opioid reversal and withdrawal physiology and outline monitoring and mitigation strategies.
